The Sock Adventure
Written and illustrated by Mindaugas Silinskis
Once upon a time, there was a boy; a smart and outgoing boy. His name was Timothy, but everyone called him Tim. He was 10, or maybe 11.
Tim enjoyed various fun things that all his age boys would, especially riding the bike.
However, there was something rather peculiar about him. Tim wore the same socks all the time. Those were his favorite socks. Black and white socks with pirate symbols on them - images of white skulls and crossed bones were patterned on a black background.
Tim just loved pirates!
But one night something truly adventurous and unexplainable happened.
It was around 2 o’clock in the middle of the night. Tim was sleeping like a baby. Although It was a peaceful and calm night, it wasn’t that peaceful and calm under the blanket at the end of the bed.
“Hey, buddy. I am done!”, said the right-foot sock to the left-foot sock. “I just can’t take it anymore.”
“What do you mean?”, asked the left-foot sock.
“This stinky foot is making me sick. I’m leaving. Are you coming with me?”
“You must be out of your mind!”, answered the left-foot sock in shock. “We belong here, on Timothy’s feet, and we keep them warm and cozy. Where are you going to go?”
“Well”, said the right-foot sock. “Do as you wish. I’m out.”
And the right-foot sock slowly slid off the foot, crawled to the edge of the mattress, and jumped down on the bedroom floor. It looked up, waved to the left-foot sock, and quietly disappeared in the dark.
The left-foot sock didn’t even know what to think. The whole thing was just too confusing...
It was about 8.00 in the morning when Tim opened his eyes. It took him a moment to realize it was Saturday. He smiled and yawned happily. “Oh yes. Weekend!”
Tim sat up on his bed and placed his feet on the floor. He felt right away that something wasn’t right. “No!”, Tim looked down worried, “My sock! Where is it?”
He jumped up and looked around. Firstly, he looked under the blanket, then under the bed. There were no socks there, only a few pieces of LEGO. He then grabbed his toy box, which was next to his bed, and pulled it out of the corner. “Bingo!”, the right foot sock was there on the floor. As soon as Tim tried to pick it up, something unimaginable happened. The right foot sock jumped and got stuck on his face, covering his mouth and left eye. Tim got so scared that he ran out of his bedroom screaming, “Aaaah! Mom, Help!”. He ran through the living room, then the kitchen, and into the utility room.
Tim’s Mom was doing laundry there. He grabbed the sock off his face and just threw it in the air without thinking. The sock landed straight into the washing machine.
Tim was in shock. His mom? She couldn’t stop laughing. “What’s going on, Timmy? Have you been fighting with your socks? Ha, ha, ha… Good morning to you too, dear! How about you put the second one in, too, uh?”
Tim quickly took off the other sock, threw it in the washing machine, and went back to his room.
“Breakfast in an hour!”, he heard mom shouting.
“Ok, mom!”, Tim responded.
He knew what he had seen, and he knew that his mom wouldn’t believe him. He decided to stay cool and not to think about it.
About an hour later, Tim was on his Xbox when he heard mom shouting, “Timmy! Could you please help me with the laundry? I need you to hang the clothes.”
And here he was in front of the washing machine, suspiciously wondering, what to expect. Tim slowly opened the top. He immediately felt the refreshing scent coming out of the washer. Then he started moving the clothes until he found his favorite socks. Tim picked them up carefully and hanged them using the clip hanger. “Now you won’t escape”, thought Tim.
Mom’s Saturday breakfast, as usual, was amazing. Pancakes with honey.
“Thank you, mom!”, smiled Tim, “I ate so much.”
On Saturdays Tim always hangs out with his friend Richie. He got dressed, went to the garage, hopped on his bicycle, and rode towards the park.
Meanwhile, in the utility room…
“Wow, you smell good!”, smiled left-foot sock.
“You too.”
“So, what’s next? Are you still thinking about running away?”
“Well, to tell the truth, I’m not sure anymore. I think I’ll give Timmy another chance.”
“Sure, It’s a great idea! Now, let’s get dry.”
It was right before dinner time and the sun was setting beautifully outside. Timmy had just got back home. He had an amazing day.
He ran to the service room to check on his favorite socks. They were dry!
And just before taking them off the clips he paused for a moment, stepped back, and thought to himself, “I should take a shower first.”
